PRP Intra-Articular (Joint) Injections in Fort Lauderdale

At Roxy Barber Acupuncture & Aesthetics, we offer Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) joint injections as a regenerative, evidence-based treatment for musculoskeletal injuries and chronic joint pain. PRP therapy utilizes your body’s healing components. Specifically, concentrated platelets and growth factors to support tissue repair, reduce inflammation, and restore mobility.

PRP is commonly used in orthopedics and sports medicine to manage conditions such as osteoarthritis, tendon injuries, and ligament sprains. It is a minimally invasive alternative to steroid injections and surgery.

What Are PRP Joint Injections?

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) is derived from your blood. After a simple blood draw, we use a specialized centrifuge to isolate a high concentration of healing platelets and growth factors. This “liquid gold” plasma is then injected directly into the injured or inflamed joint or muscle to stimulate repair, reduce inflammation, and accelerate tissue regeneration.

Conditions We Treat with PRP

  • Knee pain & osteoarthritis
  • Shoulder injuries & rotator cuff tears & tendinopathy
  • Hip pain
  • Elbow pain (Tennis/Golfer’s Elbow)
  • Wrist & ankle injuries
  • Tendonitis and ligament sprains
  • Chronic joint inflammation
  • Plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinitis
  • Dry eyes, especially after LASIK eye surgery

Why Choose PRP Over Cortisone or Surgery?

While cortisone injections can temporarily relieve inflammation, they do not promote healing of the underlying condition. Instead, corticosteroid use has been shown to weaken collagen structure, impair tendon and cartilage integrity, and increase the risk of tissue rupture over time. In fact, research has linked repeated steroid injections to progressive joint degeneration, cartilage loss, and poorer long-term outcomes in conditions like osteoarthritis.

A 2019 randomized controlled trial published in JAMA found that patients who received corticosteroid injections for knee osteoarthritis experienced greater cartilage volume loss over 2 years compared to placebo: McAlindon et al., JAMA, 2017

In contrast, PRP targets the root cause by delivering concentrated growth factors directly to the injured area, stimulating cellular repair, reducing inflammation naturally, and promoting long-term joint regeneration.

Unlike surgery, PRP is minimally invasive, performed in-office, and requires little to no downtime. Since PRP is autologous (from your blood), it carries minimal risk and supports your body's natural healing mechanisms.

Natural Healing Backed by Science

Scientific research strongly supports the use of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) for joint injuries, tendon disorders, osteoarthritis and muscle injuries, especially in cases where traditional therapies have failed or provided only temporary relief.

  • A 2021 meta-analysis of 43 randomized controlled trials concluded that PRP significantly outperformed both corticosteroids and hyaluronic acid injections in reducing pain and improving function in patients with knee osteoarthritis. - Chen et al., International Journal of Surgery, 2021
    https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10783230/
  • In a 2014 randomized, double-blind, multicenter trial published in The American Journal of Sports Medicine, patients with chronic lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) treated with PRP reported a 71.5% improvement in pain scores at 24 weeks, compared to 56.1% in the control group (P = .019). Success rates were also significantly higher, 83.9% versus 68.3% (P = .037)
    https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23825183/
  • A 2021 meta-analysis published in PLoS ONE found that platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections significantly reduce shoulder pain and improve function in patients with rotator cuff injuries, with no serious adverse effects reported (Chen et al., 2021)

These studies support what we see in our practice: PRP doesn’t just mask symptoms, it promotes real, lasting tissue repair by stimulating collagen synthesis, angiogenesis (revascularization), and cellular regeneration.

Unlike conventional treatments that suppress inflammation temporarily, PRP works with your body’s innate healing mechanisms, making it a go to therapy in modern regenerative medicine.

Rebuild after cortisone!

If you’ve previously received cortisone injections in a joint, PRP is an excellent next step to help rebuild and restore the damaged tissue from the cortisone. While cortisone can break down cartilage and weaken joint structures over time, PRP delivers growth factors that promote healing, collagen regeneration, and long-term joint repair.

Our Process: What to Expect

During the initial consultation, we will assess your condition and review your medical history. Not every person or condition is a candidate.
A small amount of your blood is collected with a regular blood draw.
Platelets are separated from the blood using our specialized FDA-cleared PRP harvesting devices, which include a specialized centrifuge and sterile blood draw tubes. We make sure to show them to you and open the packaging in front so you can see that it is the proper, sterile collecting tubes. Your blood and PRP never leave the room.
PRP is precisely injected into the affected joints or muscles.
Take a break from strenuous exercise for 3 days. Avoid anti-inflammatories when possible. Healing continues for 3 months as inflammation subsides and tissue regenerates.

What Is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)?

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is an autologous blood-derived product created by extracting a small volume of the patient’s blood, processing it via centrifugation, and isolating a high concentration of platelets. Platelets contain key growth factors (such as PDGF, VEGF, TGF-β, and EGF) that are critical in modulating inflammation and facilitating tissue regeneration. It’s like fertilizer to grow tissue, better and faster.

When injected into the affected joints or muscles, PRP initiates a cascade of biological activity that enhances cellular repair and mitigates pain over time without introducing synthetic agents into the body. It’s all-natural!
